Hey everyone. This may come out as a little bit of a rant?, I don't know, but here it goes. I was wheelin through my April 2012 issue of Scale Auto (a good issue, by the way) and I was reading about the great job Dave Thibodeau did on Earnhardt's "first win" car, and the wheels didn't look right. I had never seen a #2 blue and yellow Monte Carlo from 1979 with black wheels. Also, the blue interior didn't seem right. I had done a fair amount of research 100 years ago when I built a #2 Monte Carlo and I had seen pics of the car with white and/or chrome wheels, but never black? And, I thought that the interior was gray. There could have been many variants of this car over the seasons that it was raced. Any thoughts? (Ahem, calling HRT ;D) I did find some museum shots of it on the net with black wheels. Did they just throw those wheels on it to roll it into the museum? I guess my question is; Was this car ever raced with black wheels? And, the interior color? I know, I know, who cares, right? I don't know, but it is bugging the crap out of me...

I just went through some Earnhardt books I have, and from the few pics from that era I found, the blue interior is correct. Not to say that gray is wrong, that may have varied from car to car. On the wheels though, I didn't see any of the Monte Carlo with anything but white wheels...however, I do have a pic of an Olds from that era that they used for the Superspeedways, on track at Daytona with black wheels, so it at some point there may have been black wheels on a Monte...

Well, poop. Thanks HRT for your efforts. When I fall back into my NASCAR trough, maybe I'll re-build one with the correct interior, and use a plastic body instead of a mile-thick resin one. I seem to remember looking through stuff in the early 90's and only found black and white pics that showed ANY interior stuff, and I guessed wrong. I was pretty sure about the wheels though. Did you see ant wheels with multi-holes? When I was looking I could only see ones with 5 holes. (old-school-NASCAR-style).

I saw both styles of wheels on that era car. I think I'm going to build one or two following that article, but with white wheels. The '79 and '80 seasons are the only ones that I don't have a model to represent. Wrangler showed up on that body style for the '80 season. If I can find a decent Olds body, maybe I'll do a Monte for one season and the Olds for the other one. I want to get "back on track" one of these days with some Big E cars. If you ever want to look at my books let me know.
